-> Not every translation of the three Greek plays written more than 2400 years ago would carry suspense, reality, and meaning for modern played lovers. This translation does. Mr. Greene has acted as go-between for two literary periods conveying, as truly as possible, the universal meaning and spirit of the place of one age in the most natural up-to-date language of the other. Probably more than any other current version, this one makes the reader forget that it is a translation.

Mr. Greene has not attempted to imitate the traditional language of English dramatic poetry. He has used, instead, in their appropriate places, some prose, and good deal of blank verse, and, for some dialogue, and all the courses, a simple and flexible free verse line. he chose the three plays as representative of the divergent interest and techniques of the three tragedians.

Aside from the translation itself, a large part of the books interest is due to the provocative essays which introduced the book in each play. Avoiding routine information on the Greek theater, or on the place under consideration, the author centers attention on matters of genuine interest to the student or reader.

The general introduction deals with the importance of conventions, aesthetic and psychological. In distinguishing periods of drama, and, specifically, the chief conventions of the Greek drama, which the reader must understand, and except to the most meaning from the plays: The chorus, the verse form, and the traditional myth plot. The introduction to the individual place, interpret a basic aspect of each play, which suggests the method and purpose of the author.

The essays equally with translation, bring to life for the 20th century reader, the work of the three great Greek tragedians.
