—In this book is made the first serious attempt, based on wide research and much practical experience, to provide a reliable work of reference for the identification of the traditional tartans, and to establish a canon for their correct weaving.

The first part of the book is devoted to an outline of the history of the use of tartans, and to a discussion of tartan designs in general, with particular reference to their significance as distinguishing one clan from another. This is followed by a clan-by-clan description of the individual designs, with brief notes explaining the source of the tartan where this can be given, any special features of the design, and what is known of its story. This second part of the book contains 22 full-page multi-colour plates showing, on each, 10-12 separate multi-colour strips, each of which illustrates the sett of one tartan. (The word 'sett' is here used to denote the specific proportions, the relative widths of the stripes of colour, in some example of the design of a tartan).

Other full-colour plates are 8 showing facsimiles of selected representative tartans, and 6 illustrating the chapter on tartan designs. The whole work is as accurate and authoritative as possible in both text and illustration. It is intended to appeal alike to the weaver and to the lover of tartans.
