—“This volume by Professor Katz is a recent addition to the Cornell series of narra- tive essays on the development of western civilization. It is an interpretation of the history and culture of the period from the middle of the second century of our era to the beginning of the seventh century, by which time the author be- lieves that European civilization had assumed its distinctively mediaeval characteristics.

Following a short prologue which stresses the constitutional character of the government of the Principate, Professor Katz analyses in Chapter I the condi- tion of the Roman Empire in the time of the Antonines indicating the weak foundations upon which its imposing superstructure rested. Chapter II he de- votes to the Age of the Severi, the disasters of the third century, and the res- toration of order under Diocletian and Constantine. The third chapter treats the rise and triumph of Christianity; the fourth the breakdown of Roman authority and Roman culture in western Europe. The fifth and by far the longest chapter, entitled "Europe in Transition," traces the emergence of the new, mediaeval civilization in the fourth, fifth and sixth centuries as the result of a merging of Roman, Germanic, and Christian elements. The sixth and final chapter summarizes the Roman legacy to western civilization. There is a chrono-
logical summary, a list of suggestions for further reading and an index. This is a very scholarly and also a very readable little book” ***From a Review
