—Against the background of present-day Spain, this is the story of the house of San Isidro, an aristocratic family famous for their proud men, beautiful women and brave bulls.

The first section of the book tells of their fate during the holocaust of the Spanish Civil War, when the San Isidro women were prey to the mob besieging the family palace. In the second part the family has returned to the palace and the San Isidro bulls have regained their pre-eminence. Manuel, the Duke of San Isidro, has threatened to kill Diego, Spain's greatest bullfighter, because Manuel's daughter Dulce refuses to give up her lover, but he is persuaded to wait until after the great corrida.

The first San Isidro bull to appear in the ring is shouted out of the arena by the furious crowd because the animal refuses to fight. Dulce begs Diego to save the honor of the San Isidros, and so win her father's consent. Diego agrees to do so, and there follows one of the most magnificent pictures of a bullfight in modern fiction.

Only Saint-Paulien, the author, and only Spain, the country about which so little is known, could give us this authentic novel of civil war and peace, of revolutionary and royalist, of romance and tragedy.
