—“The achievement of Norman rule in England, Southern Italy and the Principality of Antioch, with the brief Norman adventure in Spain mentioned a couple of times but not explored.

Douglas' thesis is that the assertion of power of by the Duke of Normandy lead to the defeated seeking their luck elsewhere in Europe but then goes on to see the Normans as central to developments in late 11th century Europe: sharpened conflict between Latin and Orthodox Christianity and between Christians and Muslims, Holy Wars which become the Crusades, the establishment of effective powerful states in England and Southern Italy, the development of a reforming assertive Papacy and the spread of the forms of religious devotion found in the Duchy in the earlier 11th century to other parts of Europe.

Of particular interest is the preservation of bonds of patronage and influence between families that seems to have been carried over from Normandy to England.

Douglas gives credit to pre-existing forms of government that the Normans made use of and amplified but after reading I felt the need for something more critical of the Normans, or that at least will put them into a broader comparative perspective to get a more balanced sense of their activities.” From Review*
