—"AMERICA," WRITES RUTHERFORD PLATT, "was the biggest surprise in the history of man. The first white men who leaped ashore on its beaches simply could not imagine the size and nature of this land mass. It took almost two hundred years after the first landings to reach the Mississippi. It was more than three hundred years after Columbus when the first explorers went all the way across to the west coast." The excitement of those three hundred years is the story of this book. And the reader is doubly fortunate in that Rutherford Platt, himself an explorer, not only knows his discoverers and explorers, but, in addition, has a unique familiarity with the early American scene. This was the wilderness of forest, river, mountain, plain, and desert against all of which the great adventurers played their part.

All the famous discoverers are here-Columbus, the Norsemen, the Cabots, the Spaniards to the south and the French to the north, Bering and his discovery of Alaska, the Mountain Men and scores of others-each rescued from the dull history books and made live and vibrant.

Readers of Mr. Platt's earlier books, like This Green World, will delight in his descriptions of the great wilderness of hard woods and soft woods which covered America three centuries ago, and will be fascinated by his accounts of the passenger pigeons, the herds of bison, the grizzly bears and the wildlife in general which fill these pages.

This is a stirring book, in some respects a wild and torrential one, which will open the reader's eyes and ears and arouse in him an awakened respect and appreciation for the land he lives in and for that magnificent wilderness out of which it came and grew.
