“A Homeric Tale of Life in the North” Illustrated with Maps by George Annand with 112 Photographs —Peter Freuchen, a giant of a man, lived for many years in Arctic Greenland. He became, as has no other white man, a part of this unyield. ing country and its strange, brave and happy people. He married an Eskimo woman, Navarana, and tells with simple dignity of their life together, and of their two children, Pipaluk and Mequsaq. He grew to understand the Eskimos until he could honestly return the real love and admiration they held for him.

Freuchen delighted in their cheerful habit of disparaging their wives as they loaned them to an unattended visitor. He was deeply moved when he saw them carry out in danger a tacit but general agreement of devotion 1o death. He roared as he watched them, coming South annually to trade. politely minimize the value of their furs and themselves as hunters. Entering into their living he learned much of nerve, humor and human decency. His full appreciation of Eskimo life and character, make this book as big as Peter Freuchen himself.

An epic quality moves through the episodes of men and dogs driving in the steel-blue light of the Arctic. The terse accounts of mind-robbing starvation and freezing flesh, of men, with their dogs killed and eaten many days behind them, stumbling, falling, crawling on through sheer nerve to food and life,-of the thunder of ice-packs, breaking in Polar seas, setting whole families adrift in maelstroms of crashing ice-floes, ring true in this book.
