—Here is a unique picture of British North America has the 19th century visitor saw it. 30 extracts have been selected from published travel accounts within the period begun by the establishment of upper and lower Canada and ending with confederation. With the addition of the contemporary illustrations the book comprises a wise look at “ourselves as others saw us”

Most of the extracts are intended to review leading aspects of the life and society of the inhabitants of upper and lower Canada during this important span of 76 years. Some accounts are mainly political, some general, others relate to farming, canals, railways, and industry, to society and rural conviviality. Their tone ranges from lively knowledge and active curiosity to, occasionally, the asperity of the jaded traveler.

This was a period when constant stream of overseas visitors came to this continent. All of the travelers spent time between the 49th parallel thus the extract contain valuable comparisons between the colonies, and the states since most of the extracts are taken from books by visitors, they also disclose British attitudes towards the colonies and towards the New World in general.

Each extract has a brief introduction provided by the editor. In addition the reader will walk on a full bibliography of the travel books of the period.
