Above all, the book repeatedly insists that man is asleep. It is only at the moment when he awakens, not merely to consciousness, but to con-science, that his true evolution can begin.

->G.I. Gurdjieff was a spiritual teacher at the turn of the last century, until his death in the late 1940s. He was a complicated and enigmatic figure who taught that people cannot perceive reality in their current condition because they are not conscious of themselves, but rather live in a state of a hypnotic "waking sleep". "Man lives his life in sleep, and in sleep he dies."
