Nevertheless, in the aftermath of the crusade, Christian and Muslim leaders were able to enjoy the fruits of peace together when Hubert Walter, Bishop of Salisbury, met Saladin in September 1192. The bishop described Richard in the usual effusive manner of a courtier as well as a cleric and one bred to flattery of the great:
As regards my lord the king, I may say that there is no knight in the world who can be considered his peer in military matters, or his equal in valour and generosity. He is distinguished by the full possession of every good quality. But why waste words? In my opinion ... if anyone could give your noble qualities to King Richard and his to you so that each of you might be endowed with the faculties of the other, then the whole world could not furnish two such princes.
Saladin and Richard shared the qualities of "Lionheart" to a greater or lesser extent: courage and nobility, pride and generosity, greatness of spirit and humility.
