…an interpretation of his writing and his art.
Kahlil Gibran, author of The Prophet, has been described as "The Dante of the 20th Century," as "The Immortal Prophet of Lebanon," and as "The Savant of His Age." In this study of Kahlil Gibran's parables, Mrs. Otto, herself a native of Lebanon, correlates Gi-bran's writings, especially his parables, with his art. By definition, the parable is a fictitious narrative or allegory of "events in human life or of a process in nature, by which some great spiritual truth is illustrated or enforced."
The Parables of Kahlil Gibran is in four parts. The first part relates events and experiences that molded and formed
Gibran's opinions of man in society and man's relationship to man. The second part deals with Gibran's parables. Mrs.
Otto primarily presents these parables in the books he wrote directly in English— from his first published English book, The Madman, through his later works showing the transition period from disillusionment into a more mellow philosophy. The third part is a discussion of Gibran's art, and the fourth a summation of his philosophy of life. The Parables of Kahlil Gibran is complete with many examples of Gibran's great wisdom and is illustrated with twenty-one reproductions of his paintings.
