—Eleanor Shipley Duckett, one of the first women to receive a degree from Cambridge University, was for twenty-one years professor of classical languages and literatures at Smith College and wrote many scholarly works on Latin poets of the archaic, classical, medieval, and Renaissance periods and on Anglo-Saxon scholars and historical figures. she was an English-born philologist and medieval historian who spent most of her career in the United States.
—> This book tells the story of those wayfarers who, from the fifth to the ninth centuries, carried their convictions and their learning over land and sea to the far parts of the only world known to them: the Celtic, Saxon, and Frankish saints of the early middle ages.
Here are their perils and adventures with kings, heathens, and simple people, adventures undertaken joyously for their faith. Those who are attracted by the miraculous will find humor and charm in the legends which have for centuries clustered about the lives of these wandering saints, from Patrick and Columba to Boniface and his dear friend and disciple, the nun Lioba.
Miss Duckett, who is well known for her studies of Alcuin, St. Dunstan, and King Alfred the Great, has admirably steered her course between authenticated fact and tradition. Her book is therefore of value and great interest to those who want to be enlightened on a period of vast importance in terms of religion and of Christian culture. Its charming style, understanding, and humanity should attract many whether Catholic or Protestant to its delightful pages.
