—This book is intended primarily as a comprehensive volume of reference, although it will also be of value as straight reading matter to students and interested readers who desire to broaden their knowledge of the medieval period.

It is comprehensive in so far as it includes the major and significant features, personalities, events, places and movements of medieval history. The very nature of the subject precludes, of course, the possibility of total exhaustiveness. Yet, in addition to the plainly historical items covered, the notable philosophers and philosophies, as well as the literary, artistic and scientific figures and trends, have not been disregarded.

The medieval scene, in its totality, embraced an amazing variety of paradoxes and conflicting elements. It was in many senses barbarous, yet it strove to acquire and transmit the cultural heritage of antiquity. A serious perusal of this dictionary will show that, in the manner of its many contradictions, the Dark Ages had virtually their own illumination.
