—From a Review…
“First off, this is NOT a technical "how-to" book on specific methods of gold prospecting, although there is much in this book that touches upon such things and will be of benefit in that way, but more specifically this is a first-hand account of lives dedicated to the adventure of tracking down gold in the harsh desert environment of Nevada and California, circa 1950s-1970s.
This is the story told by the loving wife of a prospector, a wife who joins her husband on the often hot and dusty quest, camping in tents, eating cold spaghetti out of tin cans, meeting other desert rats, taking in the unique beauty of the desert, raising children on the gold trail, sharing in the excitement upon seeing specs of the precious metal among dirt and rock, and more often than not, sharing in the disappointments that go hand-in-hand with the quest.
This is a well-written book, with a smiling, happy, "up-for-adventure" tone, but at the same time poignant in its depiction of a dedicated wife who sticks by her husband through often trying times, viewing life with a "cup-half-filled" rather than "half-empty" attitude, even when quest for riches dug from the ground or carved from mountain sides seems to be a fool's errand.
One must conclude that the author of this book is a most remarkable woman and that her husband prospector found his greatest treasure when he found her.
This unique book, although perhaps overlooked and uncelebrated, could be considered something of a minor classic in the literature of small-time gold prospecting and certainly gives a true taste of that particular type of "gold fever", its ups and downs, and, ultimately, the special joy that is infused in this book.”
