*Provenance — from the library of Harry Bache Smith, Lyricist and composer, Smith was one of the most prolific of all American stage writers, said to have written over 300 librettos and more than 6000 lyrics, including the 1890 operetta Robin Hood. Smith was also a prominent book collector who competed with the likes of Henry Huntington and John Pierpont Morgan. When Smith sold his collection at the outbreak of World War I, it went to A.S.W. Rosenbach, a collection that, according to Donald Dickinson, Rosenbach used to "launch his career." Smith also wrote the book “A Sentimental Library: Comprising Books Formerly Owned by Famous Writers, Presentation Copies, Manuscripts, and Drawings” describing this varied collection. >Includes a Handsome a non-attached ex-libris book plate laid in.
