—In a series of biographical sketches the authors present a vivid picture of this era of barbarian invasions, feudalism, knights, and crusades. Through the lives of Gregory the Great, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lion-Heart, Francis of Assisi, Simon de Montfort, and Geoffrey Chaucer, the reader follows the stimulating history of a fascinating period. An introductory section precedes each biography and many illustrations supplement the clear, vigorous text.

For hundreds of years the Roman Empire ruled the Western World, centering around the Mediterranean Sea, but in the third century A.D. the Empire had lost its greatness; it was inwardly dead and rotten. It had become an easy prey for restless barbarian tribes beyond its frontiers. By the fifth century, barbarians had overrun the western half of the Roman Empire.
But the Romans and barbarians, bound together by the Christian faith, were to develop a new civilization which would last until the Renaissance of the fifteenth century. During this period, known as the Middle Ages, most men lived in constant fear of sudden attack from predatory neighbors. The weak sought protection of the strong, who had built thick-walled fortresses. Below these fortifications grew walled towns. The more devout retreated to cloistered lives in high-walled monasteries. The Western World became a world of walls.

From A Review… "This is one attractive path to an understanding of the Renaissance.... Four parts, following a general introduction, cover the awakening of Italy, Spain, France and England, each with a brief historical section followed by a chapter on Lorenzo de Medici, Ferdinand and Isabella, Francis I, Elizabeth I, Leonardo, Columbus, Rabelais, and Shakespeare, as outstanding examples of rulers and artists." —School Library Journal
