<Condition is Very Good as Pictured> (normal wear with markings, light edge-wear, light creasing/rubbing, corners chipped, toning to interior pages) size is approximately 11” x 8.5”
—First Edition 1977 Softcover Book. 61 pages, Acknowledgements. Contents. Introduction. Illustrations. Map. Appendices. Index. There are 104 alphabetical entries, dating from 1780 to 1840. The appendixes contain a list of twelve repositories that have documents relating to the fur trade, and also a roster of approximately 775 fur traders and fur trader employees in the Fond du Lac and Upper Mississippi Region between 1795 and 1822, with information about each. An invaluable source for those interested in the fur trade.
…“This guide describes in detail some 104 manuscript collections held by the Minnesota Historical Society pertaining to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century fur trading companies and about 800 fur trade employees. The location and description in the United States and Canada of a dozen major manuscript collections with Minnesota materials is brought to the attention of the reader. Early Minnesotans, such as Lawrence Talieferro, Henry H. Sibley, and Norman W. Kittson, are well rep- resented with their extensive collections. Also documented are the records of large and small fur companies; including those headquartered in Montreal and St. Louis.
The guide contains a preliminary roster of about 775 traders employed by the fur companies in the dynamic period of the Minnesota fur trade. These employees worked on the upper Mississippi and in the Fond du Lac area of Minnesota and adjacent Michigan and Wisconsin between the years 1795 and 1822. While not all-inclusive, the listings, compiled from trading company records and the records of Montreal notaries public connected with the fur trade, will be valuable for genealogists and biographers in helping to identify many of the confusing names mentioned in published data, diaries, and letters.
Although mainly concerned with the Minnesota fur trade, the guide also will be of value to other researchers because of its application of new ideas to an old subject. Believing that business records have not received due attention as source material on the fur trade, Bruce White points out that the early fur trade was organized much like today's business firm, and dealt with production and distributive problems similar to those facing the modern firm.
A unique source of information, the book will be valued by economic and business historians and biographers, and will be a valuable resource for the future study of the early fur trade.”
